Paper packaging is a go-to choice for many companies pursuing sustainability initiatives. It's recyclable, familiar, and widely viewed as the environmentally responsible option.

But does that actually make it the most eco-friendly packaging option? The reality is more complicated.

The sustainability of any packaging material depends on how it performs in the real world. In some applications, paper is an excellent solution. In others, paper can actually have a significantly worse environmental impact.

Why Paper Packaging Has an Eco-Friendly Reputation

As sustainability initiatives become a greater priority, many companies are looking for opportunities to replace plastic-based materials with paper alternatives. It’s a popular choice for a few reasons:

  • Consumer perception that all paper is recyclable and does get recycled
  • Pressure to reduce plastic usage
  • Assumptions that all paper is biodegradable

The key here is that a lot of the sustainability benefits are based on perception. While, yes, paper absolutely can be recycled, that doesn’t mean that a majority of packaging paper will be. If paper is treated – which packaging often is – that likelihood decreases even more. A material's reputation may be part of the conversation, but it should not be the only factor driving the decision. .

1. Need to Use More to Do Less

Paper is commonly used as a void-fill material. Rather than holding a product in a specific position, it often works by filling empty space inside a package and providing a layer of cushioning around the item.

For certain applications, that approach works well. For others, achieving the required level of protection may require a significant amount of material.

Fragile, heavy, high-value, or irregularly shaped products often need an enormous amount of void fill to achieve the same level of protection as a custom foam insert. This excess material usage is not only counterproductive, but is increasingly being punished as regulations evolve.

2. Damage = Double or Triple the Supply Chain Impact

Even the most environmentally conscious packaging decision still needs to perform its primary job: protecting the product.

When a package arrives damaged, the environmental impact extends far beyond the original shipment. A replacement product must be manufactured or pulled from inventory. Additional packaging materials are used. Another shipment is sent. In some cases, the damaged product must also be returned.

A single shipping failure can create multiple trips through the supply chain, increasing transportation activity, material usage, and operational waste.

3. Recyclability is Only One Part of the Larger Picture

Recyclability is an important part of sustainability, but it’s not the only factor that matters.

Packaging performance, material efficiency, shipping requirements, and product protection all play a role in the overall environmental impact of a packaging system.

This becomes especially important for products that are fragile, expensive, sensitive to scratching, shipped long distances, or handled multiple times throughout transit. In these situations, selecting packaging based solely on recyclability can overlook other factors that influence overall sustainability.

A recyclable material that fails to adequately protect a product may ultimately create more waste than a less recyclable material that consistently prevents damage.

Eco-Friendly Packaging Starts With the Application

There is no universally perfect packaging material. Paper can be an excellent and sustainable choice for many applications. So can custom foam inserts.

A truly sustainable packaging decision considers:

  • The product being protected
  • The shipping environment
  • The amount of material required
  • Long-term performance
  • Protection requirements
  • Overall shipping efficiency

The most sustainable packaging solution is often the one that balances protection, efficiency, and material usage while minimizing waste throughout the entire shipping process.
