Foam Packaging Profiles 101

Foam packaging guards your products during transit, to ensure they reach their destination unscathed. But how they protect starts with their shape. In this article, we’ll go back to basics to dive into the most common foam packaging profiles.

What is a Foam Packaging Profile?

A foam profile is the shape of a foam part as seen from the side. There are a few common profiles that you’ll see. These shapes help cradle and protect products in transit or can be used as blocks to protect large items while moving (for example: moving a large machine from one area of the warehouse to another).

Common Foam Packaging Profiles

While each foam packaging application is ultimately customized to your product and needs, there are a few common profiles that you’ll start with:

1. U Channel - Like the name implies, this forms the shape of a “U” when viewed from the side. The indentation within the foam is semi-rigid, to provide a snug fit.
2. Tube - This profile is completely round, and can include a small slit. This can be fit around very thin objects to provide cushioning.
3. L Shape - As you might have guessed, this looks like an “L” when viewed from the side. This shape helps cradle a product, alongside other foam pieces.
4. Block - This is a solid block, typically in a square or rectangular shape. It can be used to further support products inside of a case, or fill gaps for a more secure fit.

You’ll often find with complex parts like case inserts, that several different profiles are used together to create the perfect fit.
