Designing Influencer Kits Around the Unboxing Experience

by

Influencers can receive a lot of influencer kits. How do you make yours worth opening, and make the experience memorable once they do?

A great-looking exterior can get attention, but the experience after opening matters just as much. Poor organization, products that shifted during shipping, difficult-to-remove items, or an unclear presentation can work against the unboxing experience the brand planned. Planning the insert around both the products and the desired experience can help bridge the gap between the campaign concept and the package that ultimately reaches the recipient.

Start With What You Want the Recipient to Do

Before choosing materials or designing the insert, define the goal of your influencer kit. Is the recipient supposed to:

  • Try one hero product?
  • Explore several products in a collection?
  • Compare different versions or flavors?
  • Use multiple components together?
  • Share an unboxing or product demonstration?

That goal should influence which products are included, how they're organized, and what the recipient encounters first. For engineering and procurement teams, these decisions turn a broad request to “make a PR box” into clearer packaging requirements. A kit built around one hero product may call for a very different insert than one designed to compare several products or use multiple components together.

Design the Unboxing Around a Clear Hierarchy

Once the contents of the influencer kit are established, decide what should command attention when the package opens. A hero product might deserve the central or most prominent position, with supporting products arranged around it. If products need to be experienced in a particular order, the layout can help guide that progression. This could even include actual layers if you want to drive engagement.

Foam can create deliberate spacing and positioning without relying on loose filler to hold everything in place. Custom cavities give each component a defined position within the kit, allowing the layout itself to establish that hierarchy. The primary product can take the most prominent position, while accessories or supporting products remain organized around it.

That presentation also makes relationships between products easier to understand at a glance.

Make Every Product Easy to Remove

Looking good in the box isn't enough if the recipient has to fight with the packaging. The insert needs to balance two competing requirements: holding each component securely and allowing the recipient to remove it easily. A cavity that is too loose may allow the product to move during transit, while one that is too tight or deep can make the unboxing experience awkward.

The ideal scenario is to have a fast, easy unboxing experience that keeps attention and gets to the point quickly.

Here are some considerations for unboxing ease and overall experience:

  • How deeply products sit in the foam
  • Whether finger pulls or other design features are needed for easy removal
  • Product orientation
  • Fragile or awkwardly-shaped components
  • Whether items need to be returned to the insert after use

These decisions should be made around the actual dimensions, shape and handling requirements of each product. The goal is a secure fit that protects the contents without creating unnecessary friction when it's time to take them out.

Plan for What Happens During Shipping

The recipient never sees how the kit looked when it left your facility. They only see what arrives. That means the packaging has to preserve the planned presentation through handling and shipping, not just look good when the kit is initially packed.

If you carefully arrange an influencer kit but the products shift, rotate, or get damaged during transit, your recipient won’t see what your team actually designed.

To solve for this, design the packaging insert around the actual product weights, shapes, and vulnerabilities. Heavier components may require more support to limit movement, while fragile or unusually shaped products may need cavities designed around specific areas of vulnerability. The end goal should be to preserve the planned unboxing presentation for both the influencer and their viewers.

A good way to test this is to ask: Will the kit still look intentional when it reaches the recipient?

Turn the Campaign Idea Into a Packaging Plan

By the time you're ready to design the packaging for your influencer kit, the campaign concept should translate into concrete steps: which products are included, what the recipient should notice first, how each item should be removed, and what needs protection during shipping.

Foam Industries can translate those requirements into a custom foam insert designed around your products, desired presentation, shipping requirements and production volume. The result is packaging designed to protect the contents while helping the finished kit arrive looking just the way your team intended.
